It is hard to see from this photo, but this glorietta near our house has two lanes and traffic signals on it. People here drive really fast and don't hesitate to cut in on you or honk at you if you are not going as fast as they think you should. It's a bit hairy at first but you find yourself flying right in there without much thought after awhile. There is a four lane strip in the middle with arterial roads on each side of "Deiz y ocho de Marzo", the bigger of the two streets meeting here.

Eduardo and Annette

Here is a photo of a birthday party at our house for fellow missionary Andy Clark (on the right with the Kojack haircut). Eduardo and Annette and their family came over to enjoy some "Tres Leche" cake (three milks cake). I love it!

We have become pretty good friends with Eduardo and their family; they live right across the street. They have 4 children; Sophie 12, Karen 9, Eduardo 7, and Daniel is a newborn and made his entrance about a month ago. (You can see the portable baby crib in the background.) They have spent time showing us around the city and various points of interest.

Please pray for Eduardo as his mother is terminially ill. He has been going to work every day and staying with her every night at the hospital. She is a diabetic and has a virus on her brain. Pastor Rafael Santana and I were able to go visit her recently. Pastor was able to read the 23rd Psalm with her and to talk with her about placing her trust only in God. She is only 57 and is understandably fighting feelings of bitterness about having her life cut short. We were able to pray with them and continue to pray that the Lord will pour out His grace on her.

Big Mac

It's amazing what a few bags of dog food and a few months can do!! One of the things we did was help Pastor Antonio pour the floors in 2 of the bedrooms of his home. It was a great time; just me and Brent doing some father-son time and Brent got to play with Nahum who is his age. (Daniela, Pastor Antonio's daughter, is sitting next ot Brent in the photo.) Pastor Antonio's wife fed us well; her homemade flautas are awesome! Good Spanish practice as well as learning more about cement finishing the Mexcian way. Pour the gravel and sand and cement into a pile and mix thoroughly. Bake on high for 30 minutes. No, wait that was the cake receipe. Let's see; oh yeah: add the right ratio of buckets of water once you have made a "pool" for it. Then mix thoroughly and either haul it our in buckets through the window or into the wheel barrow and down the hall. Piece a cake. I am looking forward to fellowshipping more with Pastor Antonio once we get to Autlan.

Mountain Biking

There is a neat guy up the street named Victor. We have been studying Ephesians in the Sunday School hour. I have done a message on Eph. 2 ( one of mi muy favorito pasajes) and Ephesians 4. I also spoke on Mothers Day about Mary's Magnificant in Luke 1. No, I am not preaching in Spanish yet; Pastor Rafael is translating. We can't expect people to come to church to be tortured can we? :)

You will notice Dane ,Christian, and Morgan singing on Mothers day also. I feel like I am in college again and having those dreams like I use to have where I was behind on my studies and finals were tomorrow! Language school has been alot more of a challenge than I thought it would be. Praise God today I took the finals for level 3. August 8th school will be over and a group of 13 are coming from my home church of Bethany Baptist in Salem, Oregon for a 10 day missions trip.

OK; about the airplane: here in Mexico there are small schools everywhere but I have yet to see the traditional yellow school bus. People either give their kids a ride or walk them to school. (We live 3 doors down from a school and every morning and afternoon there are a bunch of cars looking for a place to park so they can pick up their kids. Parking is a valuable commodity and there are also no big parking lots common to schools in the U.S.)

One day we were on our way home from language school when we saw this "Bus" parked in front of a school. I came back with the camera just as it was driving away. It said "Limosine" on the side and it looked like they hired it for a field trip or something. Pretty cool actually but VERY wide! Visibility for the driver wasn't too hot either.

The Virgin of Guadalupe

Even in Oregon I have seen how devoted to the Virgin of Guadalupe many mexican people are. You see the stickers on the cars, the tatoo's, etc. It is even more so here. It is very much intertwined with the identity of the nation. I decided to read up on it a bit and to try to learn something about it. I found an interesting article about it at Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_Guadalupe

I took the photo at the park near our house. There is Pastor Rafael and his wife Myrna, Jose Eduardo and his family, Arturo, Rosie, Coco, Martie, Pepe, Gustav, and many others that I haven't quite got the names down yet. Andy and Jesse, our fellow Tecate Missionaries, and their 3 girls have been attending as well.

We have been going through the book of Ephesians in Sunday school. It has been a good time. I can understand a whole lot more Spanish than I can speak, that's for sure! I would say I can usually understand maybe 60 or 70 percent of what is being said. I have been encouraged to see the love for God's Word here! Pray for this church as Pastor Rafael works full time as well as preaching on Sundays and leading the Tuesday night bible study.

Harvest Language Center

Jessica and me are taking classes right now at harvest Language Center. ( Jo'ell has been staying at home to continue homeschooling the other children.) We have really enjoyed the school so far. Our fellow Tecate Missionary, Andy Clarke, has been taking the classes with us. (see photo; he is the one with the close haircut!) The classes are small so there is good interaction with the teachers. It is ran by Jeff and Lisa King, who are from the U.S. and have been in Mexico for over 10 years. They are active in church planting also. They have a heart to see missionaries get trained to serve in Mexico and other Spanish speaking countries. Jeff and Lisa both teach and there are 2 other teachers: Pastor Moises Rodriquiez and Senora Chayo. The program uses what I would call the "old schoool" approach; they teach grammar, phonics, verbs and vocabulary. this is in contrast to the approach some schools take of just teaching converstational style Spanish. We will learn the rules we will need to know to speak the language well. This will be necessary for communicating about more complicated concepts like bible truths. Not for the faint of heart! Thanks for praying that we conjucate our verbs correctly!!

Lord, show us a sign

It is amazing the power a sign has. We were walking down the sidewalk near our house the other day and one of my friends noticed a sign for a church on the front of a building. It said "Palabra Fiel" or "Faithful Word". The name sounded good so we thought we would give it a try. We were excited to find a vibrant fellowship of about 30 people. Last Sunday was our 3rd Sunday there and their have been several visitors during this time who have came just because of the sign. One of the ladies who is a member is a new believer who sought out the church as she was going through some issues in her life that caused her to seek God and to want to know the truth about Him. She did not feel the answers were in the religion she had. She is now alive and growing in faith (Col. 1:9-12). I will post some more pictures of the church as we get them. The believers there have recieved us very warmly and are quite patient with my "baby-talk" Spanish! It is exciting to know that God has some among every people who are His!

Don't bite the hand that feeds ya

Friday Jan. 18 was a WTM day: Welcome To Mexico. Jessica and I had gotten home from Language school and we were all getting ready to eat lunch. A guy about 20 years old was knocking on the gate. He wanted to wash the car for $3 . I was in a great Friday afternoon mood so I decided to say OK. I talked with him a bit while he worked, wanting to practice my Spanish. He told me he was married and his wife was in Chicago, and that he had a 4 month old girl. While we were talking, Morgan came home on her bike. She said "Dad, I can't get my bike through the gate." I had opened half of the gate and pulled the car forward so he could get around it to wash it. I told her to just leave it on the sidewalk. When he finished I paid him and gave him a Gospel of John booklet. He left and went up the street knocking on the neighbors gate looking for another job. As I was in the kitchen I saw him on the other side of the street looking over towards our house but didn't think much of it. A minute later Brent suddenly yelled "Hey, that guy just took Morgan's bike!" Brent and I went tearing out of the house after him. He was at the end of the street just about to round the corner. I yelled at him( my mistake) , thinking he would drop the bike and run. Instead he jumped on the bike and pedaled away! Brent and I tried to catch him but to know avail. Later when my neighbor Hector got home he helped me report it to the Police.

I guess another lesson learned. It is not the first thing we have had taken since we were here. I am not used to being so "on-gaurd" all the time. I was in total shock and mad as a hornet that this guy would do that to me right after I went out of my way to try to help him. And to do it right under our nose like that was truly amazing to me. Vince Lombardi once said "Fatigue makes cowards of us all." I have been thinking of a modification to that along the lines of "Poverty can make theives out of some people." Solomon warned of the dangers of both prosperity and poverty in Proverbs 30:8,9 : "Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me niether poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: lest I be full and deny thee, and say, Who is the Lord? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain."

I believe in the total depravity of man and I guess I just got a rude awakening to it's real life impact! Jeremiah warned that " the heart of man is decietful above all things and desperately wicked; who can know it? " Just another reminder that their are many lost people here and those are the ones Jesus came to reach. Pray for Arnulfo ( at least that is the name he gave me) that he will be under conviction and that he will read the tract I gave him.

Hikin' up the Mountain

Our street is on a bit of a grade, and at one end is "Mount Tesoro." One of Brent's buddies, Saul, offered to show us the trail so I went up it with them. It was a great view of the city. I wish I knew how to take a 360 degree photo. It is amazing to look down on 8 million people; twice the population of the State of Oregon in one city! It made me think of how many people there are that do not walk with the Lord. As I finished up my Bible reading for 2007 in the book of Revelation, it brought me again to grips with what it will be like when God pours out His wrath on the earth. It really adds a sense of urgency to getting out the Good News!

English Classes

We were able to travel to Autlan in December to spend some time with our fellow missionaries, John and Elizabeth Rodgers. I had promised them a dog about 4 years ago. Today I finally delivered on that promise! Yeah, I know, pretty late. We were planning on going to Ireland at the time I made the promise. Ireland requires a 3 month quarantine on dogs brought in to the country. So I told them that as soon as we got there we would get one. The "there" turned out to be Mexico! I think this pup will be a great thing for our kids right now. I confess to being a dog lover myself! Thank you, Lord! She is a Golden Retriever and I think Brent is going to name her "MacKenzie."

"Bella" - a Great Movie!

Most of the believers I know are always on the look out for a good movie to watch. I recently heard an interview about a movie titled "Bella" on Family Life Radio. Directed by Alejandro Gomez Monteverde of Mexico. With Eduardo Verástegui, Tammy Blanchard, Manny Perez. I took Jo'ell to see it with our friends Robert and Traci. It was an intense movie. It involves an ex pro soccer player and a waitress; I'll leave it at that. For a preview go to http://www.bellamoviesite.com/ . Leave me your thoughts in the "comments" section if you go see it; I would like to know if you liked it.
At the showing for this movie there was a preview for a movie coming out in March of 2008 called "Under the Same Moon." it is about a mother and son from Mexico separated from each other; it looks pretty good. As a newbe in gospel work in Mexico I am trying to learn as much about the culture as I can. This movie might help. Check out the trailer for it at www.foxsearchlight.com/underthesamemoon/

Getting settled in Guadalajara

We are enjoying getting settled into our rental house here in Zapopan, a municipality within greater Guadalajara. They call neighborhoods "Colonia's" and ours is Pinar de la Calma. It is a narrow one way street where people park on both sides of the street. There some things that are different than our neighborhood in the Oregon:

Bottled water truck comes twice a week and knocks at the gate.

Neighborhood vendors abound and sing their product jingle as they walk up the street.
We get tamales, pastries, flowers and honey sold on our street on a regular basis.

The garbage truck comes twice a week and it's free!
The drivers have a cowbell on their belt to let you know they are coming.

Churchbells from up the street are heard on a regular basis.

We are enjoying it very much. I am glad the kids are making friends. The neighborhood is pretty quiet right now with a lot of people gone for the holidays. My friend Hector is in California and should be back next week. I am looking forward to seeing him again. The cars ran great though the trailer we were towing behind the Explorer was too heavy for the little V6 and it had to work hard to get it here. The bumpy roads and the weight in the trailer were too much for the axle, though, and one side bent. Thankfully it got us here. The latch also popped off the back door as we were driving. Praise God nothing fell out!! Made for an exciting view for Jo'ell as she was following me! We paid a wide variety of prices for gas, the lowest being about $2.70 and the highest $3.70. I stopped in one place out in the middle of nowhere in Arizona and was going to gas up until I saw the price was $4.69. I decided to try to make it to the next town! They had a sign taped to the front door saying if you didn't like their price to go somewhere else, so I obeyed.

It was a blessing to meet up with Alfredo and his friends in Laredo, Texas to drive down with in Mexico. The photo above was about 3 am when we stopped for some coffee. There were no Circle K's around but we found this little store. It did the trick and kept us going till 2 pm the next day!

South bound!

"Colina's Del Sur"
Hills of the South
our neighborhood in Autlan

Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Autlan

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_TPZcBwa0IY0/RxfAQYJK7LI/AAAAAAAAAB0/OTYT2Y-06FQ/s320/2007+8+31+Autlan+082.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122774488748584114" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_TPZcBwa0IY0/Rxe-U4JK7JI/AAAAAAAAABk/kj30gV9M6fw/s320/2007+8+31+Autlan+073.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122772367034739858" />
Our house is filled with boxes and excitement is in the air! Things are going well as we can feel the tide rising. Soon we will begin our voyage to the heart of Mexico. Our departure date is now November 26th…..a true Thanksgiving event! We have made plans to drive down with my brother in law, Alfredo Hernandez, (Jo'ell's sister; Dawn's husband). He is a Mexican citizen and is going to visit his parents near Mexico City. This will be a real blessing to us. We will meet him in Laredo, Texas and he will go with us most of the way to Guadalajara. We will be able to make it to Guadalajara from Texas in one day. Once there we will begin looking for a house to rent. We can stay with some friends at Harvest Language Center until we get the house rented.

Once we get settled in there, we plan to spend most of our time in December at the Regional Training center in Autlan 100 miles to the SW. We will be helping our fellow missionaries John and Elizabeth Rodgers. This we be a very exciting time as we use the month of December to get involved in the ministry at Autlan. More to come on this! The next post may be from Mexico! We have our schedule on the home page of our Website.

Nearly all of you are now plugged into Tecate Mission International for your monthly support, and we thank you for helping us make the transition...If you are a supporter who has not yet switched over, please click on the "Join Support Team" Link on our Website. There you will find the missions address if you would like to mail in a check every month. If you would like to give electronically, you can print out an ACH form and fill it out. This will allow Tecate Mission to receive the funds automatically each month from your account.

We are so thankful to those of you who have been such faithful supporters during this pre field ministry time. We would not be able to move without you! We are blessed to have 96% of our financial support for our ministry in Mexico, and we trust that God will continue to expand our prayer and financial support to provide the balance of around $300 in monthly support. We are grateful to have $10,000 in our outgoing fund that has transferred from Greater Europe Mission that will be used to pay for our moving expenses, rental of a house, Language school, and for a reserve fund. I have often asked the Lord over the last year and a half to please let me find this trailer. I knew He knew where it was!! I didn't really figure He would see fit to answer that prayer but knew He could. I also prayed that He would make whoever stole it miserable and cause them to return it. That is exactly what He did!!

You can imagine our eyes popping out as we came back from the Portland Airport on Thursday the 30th of August. As we drove down our road, I said,"Hey, it looks like someone parked a trailer in front of our house." As we drove into past it I shouted "Hey, that's MY TRAILER!!" It looked alot different since they had cut the walls off, but once I got close I recognized it. I sounded like Gomer Pyle with alot of "Gollee's" and "Shazaam's". It was just one of thse things where it hits you right between the eyes that God hears those prayers and He does care about the things that are important to us. It's not as big of a deal as when He answers a prayer regarding another person you are praying for, but still is a vivid reminder I am His and He is mine! Thank you Lord!

Tecate, Mexico

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_TPZcBwa0IY0/RhFuTzIlMfI/AAAAAAAAAAk/jgroB0k5c-c/s320/Ministry+at+Rincon+011.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5048937943681806834" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_TPZcBwa0IY0/RhFtvzIlMeI/AAAAAAAAAAc/ikpCk2W1Q0E/s320/P1000882.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5048937325206516194" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_TPZcBwa0IY0/RhFrHjIlMdI/AAAAAAAAAAU/jGtlnSC-jec/s320/Ministry+at+Maclovia+Rohas+020.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5048934434693525970" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_TPZcBwa0IY0/RhFqtDIlMcI/AAAAAAAAAAM/YctkobvMy2U/s320/Ministry+at+Maclovia+Rohas+034.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5048933979426992578" />
What an awesome week of ministry! I spent the last week with three of my kids and a group of young people and adults on a spring break missions trip to Tecate, Mexico. We were hosted by Pastor Eufrazio of Boulevard Baptist Church. Our church has been sending a team down there for the last 7 years to work with Tecate Mission (see their website at www.tecatemission.com). We had two ministries while there. One group, which I helped in, did construction at "Iglesia Christina Bautista" (Christian Baptist Church). We were able to get the roof put on and the first coat of stucco applied to the outside of their new classroom building. I was able to work with Eddie, whose father is the Pastor of "Casa de Dios" (House of God) in Tecate.
It was a real blessing since he speaks great english and my Spanish is minimal. It was interesting to hear first hand of their church planting work in Mexico.
It was a pleasure to see Jessica, Brent, and Dane get involved with the Vacation Bible School that the Bethany team held. They especially liked the worship times at Rincon Baptist Church with Pastor Juan where they held the VBS.
Thank you for praying for us while we were gone; please pray for the Church in Tecate to prosper.

Lincoln City and Skamania

Our family had our socks blest off by the believers at Faith Baptist Church in Lincoln City,OR. This group has such a warm spirit and a vibrant fellowship of christians with a heart to see the world impacted for the Kingdom of God. As soon as I figure out how, I am going to post the photos's I took of my kids doing their first puppet show for Faith Baptist. The kids, both young and old really enjoyed it. This church has been such a huge encouragment to our desire to begin ministry in Ireland. The conference started Fri. with a great meal provided by Jeff and Lynn of Otis Cafe fame, then a message from Dorothy Woods about her ministry in Africa. Saturday morning was a wonderful brunch and time to get to know folks and for them to get to know us better. I spoke Sat. night and the response great. Several families expressed interest in investing with us in ministry to Ireland. Sunday School was with Todd Sholty with Young Life in Lincoln City, followed by Leo and Lulu Calva working in Ecuador. We wrapped it up by speaking to the youth group with Tony and Jeannie Gile.
Pastor Bard Marshall suggested I attend the Conservative Baptist NW Pastor's Conference in Stevenson,WA at Skamania Lodge. I didn't know it was going on but Monday 3/19 I was able to get a room and spent Tuesday and Wednesday interacting with Pastors at my display as they attended the conference. I met many Pastors who were interested in ministry to Ireland, and also had priveledge of having my display next to the one for Corban College and getting to visit some with Dr. Reno Hoff, President of the college. I am always encouraged whenever I get to talk with him and hear his passion for the college and where it's going.
God is good - all the time! Mexico here I come.

5 Mar 07

I have been working full-time doing pre-field ministry for Ireland for a month now. It has been great to be in better contact we people and to be able to pray more and plan more effectively. God has continued to bless me and show me new things along the way. I am reading more about Ireland and trying to get more of a feel for what is going on ministry-wise in Dublin right now. I have been getting some help from a friend on getting our website up and running. It will continue to grow as we "fill in the gaps" and hopefully can portray clearly the vision God has given us for evangelism and church planting.We are heading to Faith Baptist Church in Lincoln City,OR this weekend for a 3 day missions conference. We were there last year and the church joined our support team and has been a great encouragement to us since. One of the benefits of our support raising time has been the new friends we have made. Faith Baptist gave us a puppet ministry last year; they supplied a portable stage, puppets, and some great training from puppeteer Nan Osborne. The kids have been practicing this week so they can do a puppet show at the conference. Exciting stuff! We anticipate the Lord being able to use this ministry to kids in Dublin to share the Gospel. Can't wait!
